GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education Requirement

All applicants for admission to the College must satisfy at least ONE of the following criteria:

  • BC secondary school graduation or the equivalent


Minimum English Language Requirement

University Transfer Programs and Preparation for Graduate Study Applicants Program students are asked to provide official documents showing any one of the following:

  • LPI -minimum score 4
  • BC High School Grade 12 English – minimum grade of C
  • BC High School Grade 12 Communications – minimum grade of B
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) English Language A (Higher Level) – minimum mark of 5
  • IELTS – minimum overall band test score of 6.0 overall with no band test score below 5.5
  • TOEFL [minimum score 80 (internet based), or minimum score 550 (paper based) ]


Students who cannot provide any of these documents must either:

  • Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English on the  English Proficiency Exam (50%), OR
  • Successfully complete the  Academic Preparation program with a grade average of 65%.

With a score of 50% on the  English Proficiency Exam or a final grade of 65% in the  Academic Preparation, a student is permitted to enroll in the first two of a sequence of four “bridge” English courses leading to the  English 100. With a higher English Proficiency Exam score or a higher Academic Preparation program final grade, a student is permitted to enroll in a higher level Dorset English course.

Students who achieve a score on the Dorset College English Proficiency Exam significantly higher than 50% or a Final Grade in Academic Preparation III significantly higher than 65% may seek Advanced Standing credit for English courses, as follows:

  • Students who achieve a score on the Dorset College English Proficiency Exam between 45-50% or a Final Grade in APIII between 65-74% may seek Advanced Standing credit for ENGL 096/097 (University English Skills I).
  • Students who achieve a score on the Dorset College English Proficiency Exam between 50-59% or a Final Grade in APIII between 75-84% may seek Advanced Standing credit for ENGL 098 (University English Skills II).
  • Students who achieve a score on the Dorset College English Proficiency Exam between 60-75% or a Final Grade in APIII between 85-94% may seek Advanced Standing credit for ENGL 099 (University English Skills III).
  • Students who achieve a score on the Dorset College English Proficiency Exam higher than 80% or a Final Grade in APIII higher than 95% may seek Advanced Standing credit for ENGL 100 (University Writing and Research I).
