Board of Governors Unanimously Approves Motion for Name Change

Decision part of necessary and significant re-positioning changes; broader community to be consulted

(Sydney, NS) – Today, the University College of Cape Breton’s (UCCB) Board of Governors made a unanimous decision to address the name of the institution as a crucial element in its re-positioning efforts during their regular meeting.

The Board supported a motion that 2004 is the appropriate time to change the name, emphasizing the university as a proud component of a vibrant community, and that the formal naming will be done on the occasion of the October Board meeting.  President and Vice-Chancellor John Harker will be tasked with consulting broader constituencies in the time leading up to the October Board meeting. This will include working with alumni and various other groups.  The names put forward are: Breton University, University of Cape Breton, and Cape Breton University.

Over the past year and as a lead in these events, President John Harker has met with departments and centres/institutes of UCCB to discuss what was needed to re-position UCCB to meet the challenges it faces. The one constant during these meetings was the name of the institution.

This step is one appropriately taken this year as UCCB celebrates 30 years, and offers the opportunity to re-position and energize for the next 30 years of success as Cape Breton’s only university, one which does not turn its back on the variety of learners who turn to it or on the island communities it serves. The new name will be formally announced during 30th Anniversary celebrations in October.

Many Canadian universities now offer, and some have done for years, a variety of certificate and diploma courses, resulting in the award of degrees, diplomas and certificates. Officials feel the decision to change the name to university will provide for these continued offerings as it moves forward to improve viability, increase enrollment and fundraising efforts, and additional course offerings in the future.

Another decision resulting from today’s meeting is the official naming of UCCB’s second residence. It will be called Cabot Residence.  The first residence is known as MacDonald Residence, and a third one is currently being constructed.

Last week, President Harker announced changes to appropriate administrative units to focus on overall Development.  They include Recruitment, Advancement, and Department of Economic and Technological Innovation, and the team they represent will be headed by Dr. Keith Brown as Associate Vice-President, Development. The Development dynamic will be assisted by a second change with Alexis Manley as Associate Vice-President, Student Services, and Registrar.
